Welcome to the Central Coast Wetlands GIS Project

GOALS

  • Develop accurate wetland data
  • Disseminate wetland and watershed data
  • Develop consistent methodologies for the Central Coast

CENTRAL COAST WETLANDS GIS PLANNING TOOL
The Central Coast Wetlands GIS Project (CCWGIS) planning tool provides descriptive and digital spatial wetland and watershed data for California’s Central Coast in an Internet-based, interactive geographic information system (GIS). Applications of this tool include information distribution, permit analysis, and identification and prioritization of wetlands for conservation projects. The tool is divided into two components based on content and may be accessed using the Interactive Mapping link.

Central Coast Framework
The Central Coast Framework establishes the GIS framework for the project area, the coastal hydrologic units (CalWater 2.2.1) from the Marin Headlands south to Point Conception. This component contains small and medium-scale data and imagery that cover the entire project area.

Morro Bay Watershed Pilot
Wetland mapping and data development protocols were tested in the CCWGIS pilot watershed, Morro Bay. These protocols will be adapted and applied in other watersheds within the project area in subsequent phases of the project. The pilot component of the planning tool contains all of the Central Coast data as well as large-scale data specific to the Morro Bay Watershed. Please access the Morro Bay Watershed Pilot link for more details regarding the pilot and the protocols and products developed.

The CCWGIS is a collaborative effort between the California Coastal Commission, the California Conservation Corps, and the Morro Bay National Estuary Program. The project is funded by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Wetland Program Development grant.

Interactive Mapping enables users to access and explore digital spatial information in an easy-to-use Web interface that is similar to a GIS. The Interactive Mapping Services do not provide full GIS functionality, but do provide tools for visual exploration of the data, including displaying, zooming in and out, panning, querying, and printing. For users interested in performing in-depth analyses of the data, please see the GIS Data page.

INTERACTIVE MAPPING SERVICES
Central Coast Interactive Mapping
The Central Coast Interactive Mapping Service establishes the GIS framework for the project area, the coastal hydrologic units (CalWater 2.2.1) from the Marin Headlands south to Point Conception. This service contains small and medium-scale data and imagery that cover the entire project area.

Morro Bay Watershed Pilot Interactive Mapping
The Morro Bay Watershed Pilot Interactive Mapping Service contains all of the data found in the Central Coast Interactive Mapping Service, plus more detailed data sets that are specific to the Morro Bay Watershed.

INTERACTIVE MAPPING HELP AND TIPS
Help
The Interactive Mapping help provides an introduction to GIS principles and tools. This help is also accessible from the Interactive Mapping Services.

Data
The data used in the Interactive Mapping Services come from a variety of sources and vary in resolution and quality. Consequently, layers may not align perfectly with each other or may not be suitable for overlays. The Interactive Mapping tools allow data to be shrunk or enlarged at will on the screen. However, any data analysis is done at the precision of the data, not at the display scale. Please refer to the metadata, located in the Metadata Library, for data and map scale limitations.

Internet Connections
The Interactive Mapping Services perform optimally when connected to the Internet via a T1 line or wireless network connection. Users connected to the Internet via a dial-up connection may find the Interactive Mapping Services frustratingly slow.

Disclaimer
The Interactive Mapping Services are provided for informational purposes only and are not intended to be used for regulatory or decision-making activities.

GIS DATAThe following GIS data sets developed by the CCWGIS for the Morro Bay Watershed are available for download from the SLO DataFinder:

Historic Estuarine Wetland Extent
Permits
Vegetation
Wetland and Riparian Areas

All other data for the Morro Bay Watershed and the Central Coast were derived from data currently available on the Internet. Please view the metadata by accessing the Metadata Library link to the right to determine a data set’s original source.

SLO Datafinder
The Download Data link above will open the SLO DataFinder website in a new window. Click on “Browse” to search for the data you are interested in downloading. Please download the metadata along with the shapefiles. Thank you to the SLO DataFinder for posting these data.
